Tales of a Year Abroad

Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween.

Love.

When we were children, my mother helped us make the most extravagant and exquisite costumes. I don't ever remember wearing store bought costumes--we always had to use our imagination and whatever stuff we had laying around. One year, for example, my sister went as a giant spider. Most of the legs were attached by strings so when she moved an arm, ALL the legs moved. It was fantastic.

Steve worked really hard to make Halloween happen for me this year. He bought a pumpkin from Veena-bhen (our vegetable lady) and spent well over an hour carving it. He even METICULOUSLY picked the goo off the pumpkin seeds so I could roast them because he knows how much I love roasted pumpkin seeds.

Later, he'll suffer though Rocky Horror Picture Show

We spent all last night and most of today making decorations for the smattering of kids that showed up to trick-or-treat. The kids came, ate/pocketed THIRTY-TWO Halloween-sized candy bars, drank about two liters of soda, watched Thriller (howling and hooting at the appropriate moments), and then left.

It was fabulous.

Now, we're watching horror movies under a ceiling full of dancing bats and ghosts.

Happy Halloween, y'all.
Be my Frankenstein!

Necessity is the mother of invention--construction paper held together with floss! I'm a Halloween MacGuyver!

Tissue and floss...

Upside down pumpkin man--his bottom was too round. He was a big, BIG hit with our visitors.

Glue wasn't quite dry on this one when we hung it...

ah-OOOOO! Werewolves of A-bad!

And the piece de resistance... Steve's the master of the art of collage. (It took him BOTH DAYS to make this... because he's that meticulous. Seriously, look at the ghosts' faces, the grass, the witch and cat, the MUMMY).
Ah... the crew!

Happy Halloweenie!

Awesome Tina... especially the MacGuyver floss. Woot.

Very cool sister dear, very cool. I am uber jealous as Joel, I am almost positive, will never 'celebrate' with me. I waited and waited but had not a single trick-or-treater. I myself am off to watch some Rocky horror! :) Good job you two! :)

Rock on girl, but don't forget about FeBOOary, I'm so bummed that we didn't get to do anything for halloween (except drive home from DC) other than watch halloween themed community. I was way too exhausted to try a horror movie. I might have my own mini celebration tonight after my night class.

So anyway the gang is waiting on you guys to get back so we can party like it's 10-31!

Hodgepodge and Miscellany

The land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendour and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Alladin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of traditions, whose yesterday's bear date with the modering antiquities for the rest of nations-the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien prince and alien peasant, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the world combined.
- Mark Twain

In India, I found a race of mortals living upon the Earth, but not adhering to it, inhabiting cities, but not being fixed to them, possessing everything, but possessed by nothing.
- Appolonius Tyanaeus

If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India.
